Still, Have Questions?

What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel is a topically applied liquid acid used to induce exfoliation and regeneration of certain layers of skin.

How does a Chemical Peel work?

A customized combination of ingredients is applied to your skin. The process causes the skin to dry and gradually exfoliate over the next several days. There are three Chemical Peel intensities that penetrate and revitalize different depths of skin. The result is rejuvenated skin that is healthier and more youthful looking.

What areas can I treat?

In addition to your face, a Chemical Peel can be performed on areas including:

  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Legs
How many sessions are necessary?

On average, 4-6 Chemical Peel sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart, produce the best results. Severe skin conditions such as acne scarring or dark spots may require more sessions. Most clients continue a once-a-month maintenance program to sustain the results.

How many sessions before I see results?

Most people will notice a difference in their skin after one to three sessions. Improvements are enhanced cumulatively with each session. For correction a series of six or more treatments may be necessary. Chemical peels are safe as a monthly maintenance treatment and may be combined with other treatments like microdermabrasion or photofacials to enhance skin rejuvenation and results.

What sensations will I experience during a session? Does it hurt?

Clients have described the sensation of a Chemical Peel to be similar to a warm, tingling feeling much like a sunburn. The sensation will diminish after a few minutes. Different degrees of intensity are adjusted to match your preference and comfort level.

Is a Chemical Peel safe?

Yes, a Chemical Peel is safe, non-invasive and can be performed on all skin types and colors. Our aestheticians have undergone thorough training and has extensive experience working with Chemical Peels to ensure effective and safe results.

What should I expect after a treatment?

This depends on the intensity of the Chemical Peel. There are three Intensity levels; superficial, medium and deep.

  • Superficial peel – This peel is designed to help smooth rough, dry skin, and even out skin tone. The recovery is generally rapid and usually consists of minor flaking.
  • Medium peel – Medium peels contain a higher concentration of acids. Immediately after treatment, the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day, the skin turns brown and after three or four days begin the peeling process.
  • Deep peel – The skin is red and can result in some swelling and blistering. A crust may form and the skin will turn brown just prior to peeling. Many layers of the skin will peel over one to two weeks. Temporarily, the new skin will have the color and sensation of a sunburn, which will gradually fade to your normal skin color.
Are there any side effects?

Any side effects associated with Chemical Peels are rare and usually temporary. Potential side effects include:

  • Prolonged redness
  • Hyperpigmentation (darker skin pigment)
  • Small whiteheads (Milia)
  • Superficial, local infection
  • Redness
  • Scarring
How do I know which chemical peel treatment is right for me?

Our skin care professional have be trained on each of the PCA Professional™ Products. This training will allow them to not only choose a treatment designed for your skin type, but customize a treatment, addressing your personal skin care needs.

How much discomfort should be expected when having a peel?

The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most PCA Professional™ chemical peels are gentle and create little or no burning or stinging sensation in the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. More dramatic results can be expected from a deeper peel, however, deep peels are not necessary for most skin types and conditions. PCA’s philosophy of taking a low-dose approach means our superficial chemical peels create minimal discomfort and produce beautiful and immediate results for most patients.

Should people who are frequently in the sun receive peels?

Yes, but only if they are compliant with using sunscreen protection every day. Sunbathing should be avoided directly following treatment and while the skin is peeling. If you are getting peels to lighten the skin or eliminate brown spots (hyperpigmentation), it is imperative to use a product to help control the overproduction of melanin, such as Vitelle’s Ferulic Acid, Apple Stem Cell Serums and PCAs Pigment Gel (Hydroquinone or Hydroquinone Free) along with an SPF and avoid unnecessary sun exposure to reduce further hyperpigmentation.

Will a chemical peel make thin skin even thinner?

Dry skin is partially the result of dead cell buildup, which actually hinders natural exfoliation as well as the absorption and penetration of vitamins and nutrients. Having a PCA Professional™ chemical peel will remove surface buildup, hydrate the skin and give it a plumper, “thicker” appearance. The use of topical vitamin C and peptide products in a treatment, as well as in your daily care regimen will help build collagen in the skin, thus making it stronger and more durable.
